Hart’s Deep Update: Old Craftsmen Quarter Is Complete

This morning I completed the basic descriptions of the last two locations in the Old Craftsmen Quarter in Hart’s Deep.

Boarding House
Five average quality rooms are available in this house. Most of the people living here work in the Old Merchants Quarter. The rooms do not have cooking facilities, but a hot breakfast is available for two hours after dawn, and is included in the cost of the room.

Sign of an Empty Scabbard
This shop produces scabbards of all kinds, from bladed weapons to holders for scissors and other tools to be used on a belt. The owner carries a variety of scabbards of the most common kinds, and will customize or make custom orders.

Four more quarters to go, and then Hart’s Deep itself is done.

Kandris Seal Conversion Update: Wizard Manacles

The conversion of the magic sections for The Kandris Seal are where the greatest amount of work will have to be done, and it’s coming along well. The Fate Core system leaves things so wide open and flexible that it works very well for the setting, but at the same time, we want to make sure the players and GM get a good feel for how magic works. And that’s where our effort is currently being focused – converting all the examples from the original book into Fate Core.

Here’s an example of a partial conversion – things still need to be worked out, but we think we’re on the right track:

Wizard’s Manacles
Aspect: Tainted Magic Suppressor
These bindings are used by followers of the Keepers against anyone with magical abilities, especially members of the Thaumaturgia. Once the manacles are placed on the target, a Taint skill roll must be made against the mage’s Arcana skill. If the Taint roll succeeds, the I am Restrained by Taint aspect is placed on the nearer of the manacles. If the roll is a tie, the aspect is placed but fate points must be spent to invoke it. If the roll succeeds with style, he gets two free invokes of the aspect.

The Kandris Seal Fate Core Edition

With the announcement of Fate Core (and its Kickstarter campaign), we’ve decided to publish a Fate Core version of The Kandris Seal and all it’s supplements. The conversion work has been started using the beta version provided to backers of the Kickstarter campaign, but TKS Fate Core will be released April 2013, once we’re sure what the licensing requirements are.

What is Hart’s Deep?

Hart’s Deep is a very large project we’re working on, introducing a new, mostly self-contained game-system neutral campaign area to be used for a complete adventure path, taking a group of d20 characters from 1st level all the way through 30th. The book on Hart’s Deep would be sold as-is, with the d20 stats available separately to those who had purchased the book, with broader descriptions of areas available for purchase separately, and the adventures sold both individually and as a subscription, receiving each adventure in a specific timeframe.

Since then, however, plans have changed somewhat. We have decided to add the FATE system into the mix, and provide stats for Hart’s Deep in both in some flavor of D&D and FATE, plus FATE stats for the adventures. The FATE version will contain certain rules elements and information specific to FATE, including suggested Aspects, new race information, and stats for the various groups in Hart’s Deep, as well as stats for the city itself.

Work on Hart’s Deep, through examples and worldbuilding discussions, has been posted at Lisa Hartjes’ blog. We invite you to go and check it out if you’re interested in the city, or in worldbuilding in general.

September 27, 2012 Update

Work continues on Hart’s Deep, with basic write-ups of the “odoriferous buildings” quarter being almost complete. One of the locations is a tavern called The Laughing Knave. Here’s the description:

The Laughing Knave
This tavern is surprisingly clean and sweet smelling compared to the other businesses in the area. The drinks available are of limited variety, but of good quality at fair prices. The food it serves is also limited, usually fresh baked bread slathered with butter, and bowls of stew (though what meat is in it is sometimes left to the imagination).

Coming Soon: Kobolds of the Frostwind Forest

Cover Art for Kobolds of Frostwind ForestEarly May will see the publication of our latest project, Kobolds of the Frostwind Forest. Written by Mark Charke, Kobolds is a setting book with a twist: a mostly wilderness setting, with a tribe of kobolds unlike any you’ve seen before.

From the book:

The kobolds of Frostwind Forest were just a nuisance until ten years ago when they began to change. These changes went unnoticed at first and now it is simply too late to undo them. The question is now how to deal with significantly more sophisticated kobolds.

This book is designed so that it can be inserted into any campaign setting. It is assumed there is a mountain near the forest. The book refers to the nearby town of Cliffside, outside of the forest, but this could be any city. Every name, except Frostwind, is a name from the kobold language. This conveniently allows the Game Master to insert this product into any existing forest near a mountain without having to rename everything or explain why there are different names for locations. Further the kobolds have not been active outside of the forest for ten years, allowing an explanation for the sudden discovery of kobolds in a previously quiet nearby forest.

Not only does Kobolds of Frostwind Forest include write-ups of the forest and its prominent inhabitants, but a dictionary of the kobold language, as created by Mark Charke. In addition, he has recorded the language and the mp3 files will be available for free download upon publication of the book.

Steam, Savants and the Kandris Seal Update

Clockwork CyborgSavants, Steam and the Kandris Seal has now entered the final stages of layout, and artwork is coming in. We managed to get the services of Storm Kerr for this project, and you’ll see an example of his work to the left of this text. Click on the thumbnail to see a larger version of the picture.

We don’t have a firm date for the release of the d20 (3.5 e) version of the book, but it should be out by Gen Con in both pdf and hopefully print format.

Stay tuned for further developments.
